The Oxford Dictionary has announced that the ? emoji is the official international word of the year, beating out Ad Blocker, On Fleek and Lumbersexual.
For those who are unsure of what ? is, you won't be able to look it up in a dictionary and you can't even pronounce what it is. Yet the esteemed minds at Oxford Dictionary have selected, for the first time ever, the word to be an emoji. The 'Face with Tears of Joy' emoji to be exact.
According to the Oxford Dictionary website, the emoji was chosen as “the 'word' that best reflected the ethos, mood, and preoccupations of 2015.” Earlier this year, the Oxford University Press partnered with leading mobile technology business SwiftKey to explore frequency and usage statistics for some of the most popular emoji across the world, and ? was chosen because it was the most used emoji globally in 2015.
The past three “Words of the Year” include: GIF, selfie and vape. What a world we live in!
Of course the internet has been erupting with reactions to the announcement, many in favour of the newly accredited word, while we are sure there are some librarians scratching their heads.
